Music is an important element in the life of Parkfield School and an enviable tradition exists.
All pupils have a weekly music lesson with a specialist music teacher, during which they are encouraged to develop a love and appreciation of the universal language of music through a broad and varied curriculum. Teaching is based around the elements of music and delivered via a holistic approach to performing, composing and listening. Pupils experience a wide range of musical styles and traditions from a variety of musical periods. They are introduced to the basics of musical notation and all Year 2 pupils are taught to play the recorder. All children have the opportunity to participate in both class and whole school singing and also to try out a wide range of musical instruments. They are introduced to music technology through the use of various software packages on both iPad and PC.
The school has a range of extra-curricular musical groups, including an orchestra, a choir and various recorder groups. All KS2 pupils are encouraged to take part in these groups that rehearse weekly and perform regularly throughout the school year. There is also an annual Year 6 musical theatre production.
A team of visiting instrumental teachers offer individual and small group music lessons on a wide range of orchestral and non-orchestral instruments by arrangement. We can also now offer singing lessons.
