At Parkfield, French is taught throughout the school. Key Stage 1 classes have one 25-minute lesson a week and Key Stage 2 have two 30-minute sessions.
The children are primarily encouraged to practise their speaking and listening skills in a variety of fun activities such as singing, story-telling, linguistic games and role-play. In the early years, the focus is on the acquisition of basic vocabulary and authentic pronunciation, with an introduction to basic phonics. Reading and writing skills, as well as grammatical knowledge and understanding, are developed mainly from Year 4.
We also promote the links between languages and celebrate our children’s varied linguistic backgrounds. Alongside this, we encourage an interest in the cultural aspect of language learning by referring to traditions and celebrations from the French-speaking world as well as from countries our children’s families come from.
